THE BUZZ: Remember when Angelina Jolie almost starred as the evil queen in Snow White and the Huntsman? (It was around the time she passed on Gravity). Well, she was attracted to this project back when Tim Burton was developing it, and she remained on board during the myriad director/co-star shuffles. And we love that she considers this story to be the kind of movie she can watch with her children. As for the rest of the cast: wow, you've got the new Doctor (Who), a welcome mainstream appearance from Elle Fanning. Ditto Imelda Staunton.

The idea of lily-white Americans running amuck in Africa feels touchy to us, and we're obsessed with how bad all of the children's haircuts are on both sides of this family. Reports say the tracking has been soft, but the movie-going family is a moving target, and we imagine the new formula of terrible critical reviews/above-average opening weekend will apply here.

THE BUZZ: Filmmaker Jim Mickle has flirted with breakthrough success before; both Stake Landand his remake of We Are What We Are pleased genre fans while ekeing out a bit of mainstream success, but its this Texas-set thriller that has earned distinct praise. It's the kind of starring role we'd hope Michael C. Hall would earn as "Dexter" wound down, and we can't wait to see how he handles being an unexpected hero who finds himself pulled into the underworld of his small town.
